General Debate under Item 3, 63rd session of the Human Rights Council, The case of Chairman Lee Man-hee before the Human Rights Council

Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Oct 5, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - On 18 September 2026, CAP Freedom of Conscience delivered an oral statement during the general debate under Item 3 of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, devoted to the promotion and protection of all human rights.

The statement raises the case of Chairman Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old founder and leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus and a veteran of the Korean War, who is currently held in pretrial detention at the Seoul Detention Center in the Republic of Korea on non-violent charges.

CAP Freedom of Conscience expresses serious concern regarding what appears to be a politically driven and discriminatory investigation targeting a religious minority, as well as the conditions of detention. Despite his fixed residence and the absence of any flight risk, Chairman Lee was held in cells without air conditioning during Seoul's most severe heatwave, raising grave concerns for the health of a 95-year-old detainee.

The statement recalls that such treatment runs counter to the Republic of Korea's international obligations: Article 9 of the ICCPR requires detention to be necessary and proportionate; Article 10 guarantees humane treatment; the Nelson Mandela Rules entitle detainees to healthcare equivalent to that available in the community; the Tokyo Rules make pretrial detention a measure of last resort; and Article 18 protects freedom of religion or belief -- a right CAP Freedom of Conscience considers disregarded in this case.

CAP Freedom of Conscience urges the Council to call on the Republic of Korea to honour its treaty obligations by offering alternatives to detention, allowing an independent medical assessment, and ensuring a fair and impartial trial.

The workout your body does while you’re lying down

The workout your body does while you’re lying down

We are constantly challenging ourselves each day. We track steps, count calories and book gym classes. But we’re forgetting the most powerful performance tool we have: sleep. Think of sleep as “fitness for your brain and body. Just like you can’t get stronger by skipping workouts, you can’t heal, focus, or lose weight by skipping sleep. Sleep fitness is training your body to recover well — night after night. Therefore, sleep deprivation is a no-no. Here’s the truth: seven to nine hours isn’t a luxury. It’s maintenance. Why sleep is your secret weapon Recovery: While you sleep, muscles repair, hormones balance, and your immune system resets. One bad night and cortisol — your stress hormone — spikes. Two bad nights and your cravings for sugar and coffee double. Plus, you get more irritable. Brain power: Sleep clears out mental “waste” through the lymphatic system. That’s why after eight hours, you make better decisions, handle stress better, and remember things. People don’t run on four hours of sleep. They crash because of it. Metabolism: Sleep regulates ghrelin and leptin — the hormones that tell you “I’m hungry” and “I’m full.” Sleep-deprived people don’t lack willpower. They’re biologically hungrier. 4 habits to build sleep fitness Start a sleep schedule: Your body loves rhythm. Go to bed and wake up within the same one-hour window, even on weekends. It’s like showing up at the gym. Consistency beats intensity. Cool down before bed: Athletes don’t sprint and then stop. They cool down. Do the same for your brain. By 60 minutes before bedtime, dim the lights, no more work emails, no watching heavy news and no violent movies. Try stretching, reading, prayer, or journaling. Build a sleep-friendly environment: Think dark, cool and quiet. The ideal temperature is 24 to 26 degrees Celsius. Blackout curtains, earplugs, or a fan can help. Your bed is for sleep and rest only — not scrolling on your phone, not worrying. Watch what you ‘fuel’ with caffeine: After 2 p.m., caffeine stays in your system. Alcohol might knock you out but ruins deep sleep. And late, heavy meals make your body digest instead of recover. Say yes to water, not to milk tea at 10 p.m. The real goal Sleep fitness isn’t about perfect eight-hour nights. It’s about making sleep a priority, not an afterthought. You can out-train a bad diet. You can’t out-work a bad sleep schedule. Tonight, don’t just “go to bed. Recover. Because the strongest, clearest, kindest and most beautiful version of you shows up tomorrow — and she was built tonight, while you slept. Start small. 30 minutes earlier. Phone out of the room. One deep breath. Your body is already doing the work. So let it. *** Affirmation: “In sleep, I heal.” Love and light.
