New Vertava Health - Mississippi Article Defines Binge Drinking and Its Dangers

Dec 10, 2021

December 10, 2021 - /PressAdvantage/ - SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Vertava Health Mississippi, an addiction treatment provider, has released an article on its blog that explains what binge drinking is and how it is related to alcohol use disorder, also known as alcoholism. The article explains that binge drinking occurs when men consume five or more drinks in a span of two hours, or when women consume four or more drinks in the same period of time.

Binge drinking is one of the most common types of extreme alcohol misuse, the article states. Binge drinking is quite common in the state of Mississippi, where 14.6% of residents admitted to having engaged in binge drinking in 2020.

Binge drinking is also defined as the condition where a person has a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. BAC is the percentage of alcohol content in the body. A BAC of 0.08% makes a person legally intoxicated; a BAC ranging from 0.08% to 0.40% means that person is seriously impaired; and a BAC of more than 0.40% can have serious complications, such as alcohol poisoning.

Some of the other serious health issues binge drinking can lead to include cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and several forms of cancer, including liver, breast, throat, head and neck, and colorectal.

According to the article, binge drinking has risen in two demographic groups: women and older adults. Binge drinking has also been found to affect a large number of college students. The college environment plays a key role in college student drinking, especially with those who are members of fraternities and sororities.

Binge drinking and heavy alcohol use are different, technically. While binge drinking is heavy drinking within a span of two hours that results in a BAC of 0.08% or higher, heavy alcohol use is defined as consuming more than four drinks per day for men and more than three per day for women. Both binge drinking and heavy drinking can lead to alcohol use disorder (AUD). AUC occurs when a person is no longer able to control their drinking.

There are a number of signs that indicate a person may be suffering from AUD, such as being unable to stop drinking even though they had wanted to stop and tried to do so more than once; their drinking habit has interfered with home, family, and/or job obligations; cravings for a drink; spending a lot of time drinking; and drinking more or longer than originally planned.

Fortunately, there are various types of treatment for AUD. A spokesperson for Vertava Health says, “At Vertava Health Mississippi, we are committed to giving you or your loved one the treatment they deserve for binge drinking. We understand how difficult it can be to detox from alcohol, which is why we offer supervised detox that can make the process safer and more comfortable.” Vertava Health Mississippi also offers inpatient treatment and an evening intensive outpatient program.
