Award enables production and testing of ultra-flexible solar modules for portable remote power and off-grid applications

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Dec. 17, 2019 - PRLog -- Innovative solar technology startup, mPower Technology, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center. The award builds on a successful Phase I SBIR program and enables mPower Technology to develop and test solar modules for soldier portable and shelter power applications. Building on its breakthrough solar technology, DragonSCALES™, mPower Technology will readily meet the Army's requirements for cost-effective, ultra-flexible, high-efficiency, rugged and resilient solar power products.

DragonSCALES (SemiConductor Active Layer Embedded Solar) are made up of individually interconnected cells of highly efficient silicon that can be meshed into any shape or form. They are lightweight, flexible, resilient and extremely reliable, overcoming the low-voltage limitations of today's rigid solar cells. Merging off-the-shelf silicon from the photovoltaic (PV) industry and existing processes from the microelectronics industry, DragonSCALES cost-effectively enable a wide range of design possibilities for multiple solar power applications and markets. In particular, they are an ideal solution for the terrestrial and remote power markets, overcoming the power conversion efficiency limitations of technologies like thin film amorphous silicon (a-Si) while supporting "textile-like" flexibility for packaging, stowage volume and portability requirements.

Remote, off-grid power is a large and growing global market.  DragonSCALES are ideally suited to enable the next-generation of remote power solutions given the many design benefits they provide such as lower weight, lower cost, easy deployment and removal, damage resilience, form-factor flexibility and shade tolerance.

"We are honored to be selected by the US Army for this Phase II award and look forward to demonstrating how textiles built with DragonSCALES will meet the Soldier Portable and Expeditionary Manuever remote power requirements," said Kevin Hell, President and CEO, mPower Technology. "2020 will be a groundbreaking year for mPower Technology as photovoltaic solutions enabled by DragonSCALES are demonstrated, operationally tested and commercially deployed for markets such as aerospace and remote power."

Raising connected kids

For many parents today, handing a child a first mobile phone feels like a milestone wrapped in mixed emotions. On one hand, it offers reassurance. A quick message after school, a call during an emergency or an easier way to coordinate family schedules can provide peace of mind. On the other, it opens the door to a digital world children are navigating at increasingly younger ages. As online learning, messaging, streaming and gaming become part of everyday childhood, parents face an important question: How can they give their children the independence they need while still providing proper guidance? The answer may lie not in limiting technology altogether, but in introducing it thoughtfully and building healthy digital habits together. Children need to understand that having a mobile phone comes with responsibilities, from managing their data and screen time to choosing appropriate content and communicating safely online. Parents, meanwhile, need practical ways to remain involved without constantly hovering over their children’s digital activities. One option available to families is Globe’s GPlan Junior, a postpaid line designed for dependents ages 7 to 20. Offered as an additional line under an eligible Globe Postpaid plan, it allows parents or legal guardians to manage their child’s connectivity while giving young users room to communicate, learn and access age-appropriate digital experiences. The plan includes unlimited calls and texts, 100 minutes of landline calls and 10GB of all-access data with rollover and data-swap features. It also provides access to Messenger Kids and Mobile Legends, as well as selected video, social and gaming apps. Families can choose one app from each category, with options including YouTube Kids, Netflix, Disney+, Viu, Viber, WhatsApp, Roblox, Discord, PUBG and Call of Duty. Through the GlobeOne app, parents can monitor data usage, check remaining allocations, manage Data Swap options and choose their child’s unlimited apps. A parent-managed postpaid account also removes the need to regularly reload credits or keep track of expiring promotions. More importantly, such tools can become starting points for conversations about responsible technology use instead of serving merely as restrictions. “As children become more connected, parents are looking for solutions that keep up with their family’s evolving needs,” said Jo Anne Illescas-Pique, senior director for Globe Postpaid. Digital responsibility can also extend to money management. Eligible GPlan Junior subscribers who successfully register for GCash Jr. may receive GCash vouchers, providing parents with another opportunity to teach their children how to save, spend and manage digital money within a supervised environment.

PH earns first Two Michelin Keys as nine hotels make 2026 list

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has earned its first-ever Two Michelin Key hotel distinctions, with nine properties recognized in the 2026 Michelin Guide hotel selection. El Nido Resorts Lagen Island in Palawan and Raffles Makati received Two Michelin Keys, marking them as the first Philippine properties to reach the distinction, which the Michelin Guide describes as an “exceptional stay.” Raffles Makati was promoted from One Key, while El Nido Resorts Lagen Island entered the selection with Two Keys. The recognition brings the country's total to nine Michelin Key hotels for 2026, up from five properties in the previous selection. El Nido Resorts Lagen Island was recognized for its location within a forested cove surrounded by limestone cliffs, as well as its use of Filipino materials and craftsmanship, and its environmental practices. Raffles Makati was cited for its all-suite accommodations, private butler service and intimate residential atmosphere. Four properties also received their first One Michelin Key: Nustar Hotel Cebu in Cebu City, El Nido Resorts Pangulasian Island in Palawan, Hotel Okura Manila at Newport World Resorts in Pasay City, and Manami Resort in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental. Three hotels retained their One Michelin Key distinctions from the previous selection: Nay Palad Hideaway in Siargao, Fairmont Makati, and Amanpulo in Palawan. Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay welcomed the recognition in a statement saying, “This recognition reflects the continued growth of Philippine hospitality and the dedication of our tourism stakeholders in creating exceptional experiences for travelers from around the world.” She also said the recognition could help strengthen the country's positioning as a destination offering different types of high-end accommodations, from island resorts to hotels in urban centers. “Beyond the recognition itself, we see this as an opportunity to further position the Philippines as a destination where travelers can find exceptional stays, from our island resorts to our urban hotels, all anchored on the warmth of Filipino hospitality,” she added. The Michelin Key is the hotel counterpart of the Michelin Star for restaurants. Hotels are assessed by Michelin Guide inspectors using five criteria: architecture and interior design; quality and consistency of service; overall personality and character; value for the price; and the property's contribution to its neighborhood or setting. A One Michelin Key represents a “very special stay,” while Two Michelin Keys indicate an “exceptional stay.” Three Michelin Keys, the highest distinction, represent an “extraordinary stay.” The 2026 global selection includes 2,832 Michelin Key hotels across 79 countries, with 657 receiving Two Keys and 2,020 receiving One Key. For the Philippines, Angara-Mathay said the growing number of recognized properties also contributes to strengthening the country's tourism brand. “Every recognition earned by our tourism stakeholders contributes to a stronger Philippine tourism brand. As we continue to welcome more travelers, we will likewise continue working with our partners in the industry to further elevate the quality of Philippine hospitality,” the Tourism chief added.
