Kenny Slaught – Reflects on the Historical Discourse of Hoover Dam’s Construction

SANTA BARBARA, CA - April 26, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —

Constructed through America’s toughest economic hardships during the Great Depression period, between 1931 and 1936, Hoover Dam is a massive hydroelectric power station located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Formerly called Boulder Dam, the complex was later renamed to honor President Herbert Hoover. Acknowledging the great impact of this landmark architectural structure on local communities’ access to water and energy resources, California-based property developer Kenny Slaught has recently shared an insightful view of the history of development of Hoover Dam. On his blog at KennySlaught.com, he emphasized that the massive water capacity of the dam had helped transform some of America’s most deserted outposts into fast growing economies.

Due to the constant flood of the Colorado River over agricultural regions located under this river and a growing water need in the state of California, the U.S. Government thought in the construction of a dam to prevent these agriculture affectations and to generate enough water for the country’s southwest states. One of the biggest challenges for the construction was the partition of the Colorado River water between seven states where its water passed - California, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. In 1922, a commission integrated by a government figure, which at the time was the Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover, and a deputy from each of these seven states, negotiated the Colorado River division and settled an agreement for the construction of the dam. In 1928, former president Calvin Coolidge officially approved the project and shortly after that in 1930, with Herbert Hoover as the United States president the construction of this structure commenced.

The construction agreement was adjudicated to the Six Companies, Inc. The Colorado River, as per agreement, needed to be deflected through four tunnels, each one being 17 meters in diameter. For the construction of the dam wall, the rocks where the wall is now located had to be removed with dynamite. Two years after the project started, the first concrete was poured into the dam for the wall formation. Overall, 3,250,000 cubic yards of concrete had been used in the dam by the time the concrete pouring officially ended on May 29, 1935. Some say that the amount of concrete used in Hoover Dam, if paved on a regular highway, would be enough to build a road from New York to San Francisco, or else if paved in a standing position, it would be higher than the Empire state Building.

While Kenny Slaught respectfully emphasizes the dedication that has been put in this keystone project, he also notes the human loss widely acknowledged throughout the history of the construction of the dam. During the implementation period, 112 people died at the Hoover Dam. Deaths were related to the high heat in that area, carbon monoxide poisoning, dynamite explosions, among other reasons.

Founder of Investec Real Estate Companies, Kenny Slaught has been in the industry for more than four decades. A dedicated investment strategist, he manages more than 3 million square feet of property throughout California. With total transactions valued above $1.2 billion, Investec has grown to become one of Santa Barbara’s leading real estate firms. An avid philanthropist, Mr. Slaught is involved with many non-profit and community organizations, including Hospice of Santa Barbara, the Music Academy of the West. Contributing to the benefit of youth in the area, he dedicates considerable time to these and other worthy causes.

One-stop shop for PH products gets designer-led update

Filipino craftsmanship and creativity was on full display at the launch on Thursday of Kultura Atelier at SM Makati. The one-stop shop of the country’s largest department store chain is known for its wide range of Philippine-made products ranging from comestibles to clothes.  It is also a favorite shopping destination of returning Filipinos who want to take a piece of home back to their country of work. Many tourists also make a beeline to Kultura for souvenirs of their time in the tropics.  With the opening of Kultura Atelier, shoppers now have more options when an event calls for elevated Filipiniana. At the mini fashion show to mark the launch last week, the designers who were tapped to join Kultura’s roster presented pieces from their collection now available in store.  Daryl Maat showed updates to his playful redesign of the short-sleeved barong. Instead of traditional scrollwork or geometric designs, Maat’s features kid-style line drawings stitched in colored embroidery thread. Former professional model Alvin Degamo of Wear Your Culture was wearing one of his own pieces that afternoon, a denim jacket with fabric insets featuring embroidery inspired by the Manobos of Mindanao. He said his pieces are limited because it takes time for the weavers to finish a panel and send it to him.  Degamo then sends the panel to Lumban, Laguna to be embroidered by sewers he has long worked with. “I want to give the pieces from Wear Your Culture something more. Rather than use a woven panel as is, I have it embroidered or hand painted so the finished product stands out from others like it,” Degamo said.  Veteran Cebu-based designer Phillip Rodriguez has also thrown his hat into the retail shopping ring with Isla by Filippo. His elegant pieces shown that afternoon included a red terno ensemble with fabric that featured a solihya-like pattern.  Rodriguez also presented two black barong Tagalog that looked sleek and had a slimming effect.  Other brands and designers that are now part of Kultura Atelier include Fam Ph, Goodluck Humans, Harold and Harry, Jo-Rel Espina, Ken Samudio, Martin Uy, Rodolfo by Puey Quinones, Sari Lazaro, Tim Tam Ong and Zarah Juan. The festivities that afternoon extended beyond the runway with a perfume bar by Tadhana Fragrance, and jewelry customization by Nazrea Pearls. Kultura Atelier and Kultura at SM Makati still share the same space but the former  consists mainly of designer apparel and fashion accessories while the latter carries home decor and food items. In praise of the coconut There are dozens of food and decorative items for sale this weekend at the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) National Trade Fair. This time the coconut is in the spotlight with a wide range of food items ranging from coconut leaf-wrapped suman and extra virgin coconut oil to beaded hanging lamps and Christmas decor made of the tree’s different elements.  As the second coconut-focused trade fair this year, the initiative highlights the versatility of the Philippine coconut industry through innovative products in food, wellness, beauty, textiles, home essentials and handicrafts. The fair is open free to the public until Sunday and is a good place to jumpstart Christmas shopping.  Beyond showcasing local ingenuity, however, the fair opens doors for MSMEs and coconut farmer-beneficiaries to connect with institutional buyers, retailers and consumers, expanding their market reach and business opportunities.
