CNNC invites global partners to deepen fusion engineering cooperation, proposing a new international platform to advance fusion energy toward practice.

Beijing, China, September 17, 2026 -- According to Global Times, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has extended an invitation to the global fusion community to deepen cooperation on fusion engineering, calling for a new international cooperation platform to help move fusion energy from scientific research toward engineering applications.

The proposal was made at a side event themed “Fusion for Future: Engineering the Key Pathway to Realizing Fusion Energy,” hosted by CNNC on Tuesday during the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, according to CNNC.

“Fusion is a cause for all humanity, engineering is a common challenge, and cooperation is the only answer,” CNNC said, calling on the global fusion community to work together to build a new platform for international cooperation on fusion engineering.

The event was attended by Najat Mokhtar, IAEA Deputy Director General; Pietro Barabaschi, Director-General of the ITER Organization; Liu Guanghui, deputy permanent representative of China to the IAEA; Huang Ping, secretary general of the China Atomic Energy Authority; and Zhang Tao, general manager of CNNC. Representatives from institutions including the National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan, the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT), and Spain’s Nuclear Safety Council also attended.

International participants spoke highly of China’s recent progress in fusion research, engineering technologies, and international cooperation.

They agreed that it is critical to connect fundamental research, technological development, engineering validation, and industrial collaboration when moving fusion energy from scientific research toward engineering applications.

They also called for stronger international cooperation and greater coordination of resources to provide sustained support for the future development of fusion energy.

Zhang said engineering is the essential bridge between scientific exploration of fusion energy and its eventual application for the benefit of society.

CNNC, a major participant in China’s three-step nuclear energy strategy of developing thermal reactors, fast reactors, and fusion reactors, said it’s willing to work with global partners in key technology development, engineering practice, and talent training, Zhang said.

During the event, CNNC released a report on the latest progress of HL-3 and its joint experimental program, while opening applications to international partners seeking to participate in experiments.

CNNC also released updates on the construction and interim achievements of the world’s first fusion energy research and training collaborating center and introduced a proposed “world fusion engineering alliance” as well as the already established Controlled Fusion Innovation Consortium.

China Fusion Energy Co Ltd (CFEC) and ITER signed a memorandum of cooperation, while CNNC’s Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) and TINT signed a separate memorandum. The agreements are expected to further deepen cooperation in fusion engineering technologies, scientific research, and international exchanges.

Fusion energy has drawn growing international attention as countries seek to address climate change and strengthen energy security, and is widely regarded as a promising source of future energy.

However, moving fusion energy from the laboratory toward practical use requires engineering development. Fusion engineering is one of the most complex systems-engineering challenges ever undertaken, and its scale and difficulty go beyond what any single country or institution can tackle alone.

Global fusion development is now at a critical stage of moving from physics experiments toward engineering applications. This transition requires not only scientific breakthroughs and technological accumulation, but also broader international consensus on governance frameworks, standards, and cooperation mechanisms.

China has long attached great importance to the development of fusion energy. The country’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) lists hydrogen energy and nuclear fusion energy among future industries, while the Atomic Energy Law, which took effect in January, encourages and supports research and technological development in nuclear fusion.

As a major force in China’s nuclear science and technology industry, CNNC has capabilities spanning basic research, engineering construction, and industrial applications, and is working to advance fusion energy toward engineering application.

China has also worked with the IAEA to host the 30th Fusion Energy Conference, established the world’s first fusion energy research and training collaborating center, and opened 12 nuclear research facilities, including fusion research facilities, to international partners.

Smarter Bathroom: Meet Moderno Home Depot’s MHD-4500 AI Smart Toilet

The modern bathroom is evolving beyond functionality, with smart technology bringing greater convenience, personalized comfort, and new possibilities for everyday living.  Joining this shift is Moderno Home Depot’s MHD-4500 AI Smart Toilet. Introduced as the Philippines’ first app-controlled smart toilet, the unit combines smartphone connectivity, hygiene-focused functions, and wellness-inspired features in a contemporary design.  At the heart of the MHD-4500 is its smartphone connectivity. Through the Moderno Smart Home app, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, users can connect to the unit via Bluetooth and access its smart features directly from their phones. Voice control and a remote control system offer additional ways to operate the toilet, providing greater convenience and flexibility for everyday use.  “As the Philippines’ fastest-growing smart toilet brand, Moderno Home Depot believes that innovation should make everyday living more convenient and comfortable. The MHD-4500 reflects our commitment to bringing smart technology into practical home solutions, giving Filipino homeowners more opportunities to experience the benefits of a connected home,” said Rovie Sanchez, co-owner of Moderno Home Depot.  Beyond connectivity, the MHD-4500 places personal hygiene and comfort at the center of the bathroom experience. It features a self-cleaning nozzle, front and rear wash functions, bidet and hip wash options, adjustable nozzle positioning, and UV sterilization. These functions offer users more options for a personalized cleansing routine while incorporating additional hygiene features into an everyday essential.  Comfort takes center stage through its heated seat, adjustable water temperature, and adjustable drying system. Multiple massage modes, including strong-soft and moving massage functions, provide further customization. Built-in aromatherapy, dynamic lighting, and a soft night light add a wellness-inspired dimension, while automatic lid opening and closing and a slow-closing seat ring bring added convenience to daily routines.  These features are housed in a modern, elongated design crafted from premium ceramic. An LED display and integrated controls complement its contemporary appearance, allowing the unit to combine smart functionality with a clean, modern aesthetic.  Practical considerations are also part of its design. The MHD-4500 uses a siphon-jet flushing system with automatic and manual flushing options, as well as a foot-sensor flush function. A built-in water tank and booster pump support its flushing system, while leakage protection and power-outage flushing provide additional functionality.  For Jean Sanchez, co-owner of Moderno Home Depot, thoughtful home upgrades are about creating spaces that respond to people's everyday needs.  “Creating a comfortable home goes beyond choosing beautiful fixtures. It is also about finding solutions that make everyday routines easier and more personal. With the MHD-4500, we want to encourage homeowners to look at the bathroom in a new way and discover how technology can bring added comfort and convenience to their daily lives,” she said.  The product launch coincided with the opening of Moderno Home Depot’s newest showroom in Biñan City, Laguna, on Oct. 8, expanding the brand’s presence in South Luzon. The showroom offers homeowners, architects, and construction professionals another destination to explore modern bathroom fixtures and home solutions.  With the MHD-4500, Moderno Home Depot brings connected technology into a space where comfort, hygiene, and functionality intersect every day. Bringing money lessons to young learners in Visayas, Mindanao

Young learners in schools across Visayas and Mindanao are getting additional resources for classroom learning and financial education through a partnership between Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) and BPI Foundation (BPIF). Under BPIF’s FinEd Unboxed program, the foundations distributed educational materials and multimedia learning packages to recipient schools in Isabela City, Basilan; Zamboanga City; Guimaras; and Iloilo City throughout September. The school visits also featured the premiere of new episodes of “Estudyantipid,” an original educational series that introduces financial literacy to children through relatable situations and practical guidance. “At BPI, we believe that financial education is a powerful tool for empowerment. By helping young Filipinos develop practical money skills early, we can help build a generation that is more responsible, resilient, and prepared for the future,” said BPIF trustee Mary Catherine Elizabeth Santamaria. Each recipient school received a 55-inch smart TV equipped with a Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library containing more than 1,500 curriculum-aligned video lessons. The resources are designed to support daily classroom activities across grade levels through multimedia learning. KCFI vice president Edric Calma thanked BPIF for its continued support in bringing these resources to more Filipino learners. Calma described the turnover as an investment in learners’ futures, with curriculum-aligned video lessons developed to make learning more engaging, interactive, effective and relevant.

Dennis Trillo steps up as hubby, dad and peacemaker

It was GMA Drama King Dennis Trillo himself who put an end to the drama sparked by Ogie Diaz’s vlog interview with Patrick Garcia, which stirred the proverbial hornet’s nest. Dennis was even the one who offered Patrick an olive branch. Let there be peace for the sake of everyone involved, most especially the kids. Dennis made the point that Patrick could have handled a long-forgotten issue privately instead of going public, even if he felt compelled to speak to protect his daughter from being pilloried on social media. Comedienne Candy Pangilinan echoed that sentiment, indirectly coming to the defense of her close friend Gelli de Belen. Gelli was being drawn into an issue she had nothing to do with. With the controversy dragging more people into the fray, it fell to Dennis to sweep up the mess, haul it into the bin and, hopefully, shut the lid for good. No more scattering the contents, please. His wife, Jennylyn Mercado, also deserves credit for her firm resolve to say no more. Let the men take center stage in this emotionally charged, true-to-life showdown as spectators wait with bated breath to see where it leads. The same goes for Jennylyn’s management company, Aguila Entertainment, which has chosen to keep its eagle-like talons in check. Jen’s manager Becky had already said plenty in her statement, delivering criticism sharp enough to leave Patrick reeling. For now, it’s “peace on earth” in this corner of showbiz — an early Christmas treat. What, then, might showbiz followers wish for next? Since Christmas is traditionally a season for children, we can only hope Patrick reaches out to his son Alex Jazz, spends time sharing stories with him and begins making up for lost time. In keeping with the season, Patrick could even play Santa Claus. No need for the full costume or the trademark beard, just a huge sack of goodies — although making up for years of absence will take more than whatever he puts inside it.
