A group of Georgia doctors are pooling their resources to create a new mentoring program for potential postgraduate students from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, and Intersex community.

“I was inspired by the Thrive with Pride Drag for Diplomas Brunch,” said Dr. Elijah Nicholas, one of the founders of the new Doctors Brunch organization. “I’d asked God to place me around people who I was NOT smarter than, people who reflected my beliefs, core values, and drive for excellence. And that’s exactly where I found myself.”

The diplomas fundraiser was organized by Dr. Annise Mabry, emceed by Dr. Lakara Foster and sponsored by Dr. Nicholas. The Drs. found themselves meeting again and this time Drs. Dani Harris and Red Summer were present.

“It was in that moment that I realized I manifested something that was greater than anything I could have imagined, “Nicholas said. “Everyone was on board and we literally had our first Drs. Brunch the next day.”

The vision of the Drs Brunch is to become the premier collaborative nonprofit organization, operated by individuals who hold doctorate degrees, that empowers individuals within the LGBTQI community with starting and completing the requirements of obtaining a post-graduate level degree.

“The Drs Brunch is dear to my heart because very few minorities have a mentor who holds a doctoral degree and when you think of those numbers inside the LGBTQI community, that number is even smaller,” said Mabry. Mabry is a former university dean and operates Georgia’s only nonprofit alternative diploma program for high school dropouts. “We spend a lot of time when kids are in high school taking them on college tours but there isn’t anyone to take doctoral graduates on ceiling tours. I say ceiling tours because one you hold that title of Dr. you have truly shattered an invisible ceiling.”

The initial Doctors Brunch kickoff event will be held during Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta. The organization is currently seeking speakers for the event. Those interested in presenting or sponsoring a table at the event can contact Dr. Nicholas at [email protected]
