20-Week Ultrasound Tips Every Mom Should Know

Nov 11, 2022

It's more than if it's just a boy or a girl, Intermountain Healthcare experts say the 20-week ultrasound is a great time to check in on baby's development.

The 20-week ultrasound for parents-to-be is an exciting visit– it’s when they usually find out if they’re having a boy or girl. But parents should know there’s far more to the 20-week ultrasound than the color of the gender-reveal cake.

“It’s the time you figure out the sex of the fetus, but it’s the time we’re really looking at the pregnancy overall including the placenta, fetal growth and all of the organs and anatomy to make sure everything looks like it should,” said Dr. Martha Monson, a maternal fetal medicine surgeon with University of Utah Health and Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital and co-director of fetal intervention at the Grant Scott Bonham Fetal Center.

Moms and dads can help in this effort by asking about the images of their baby’s heart, brain and kidneys, she said.

Dr. Monson recommends asking the sonographer or physician:

  • “Did you see everything you needed to?”
  • “Could you rule out problems the baby could be born with?”
  • “Did you get images to help make sure my baby’s heart, brain and kidneys are developing normally?”

If the answer is no or inconclusive, Dr. Monson recommends asking what next steps to take to ensure the baby’s organs can be viewed appropriately.

When looking for an imaging center, Dr. Monson recommends making sure the center is comfortable doing fetal scans, how many they do, and better yet, if they are accredited.

If something is found to be wrong with the baby’s heart, for example, a care team will make a plan to ensure the baby gets the best care before and right after birth.

“Knowing early really helps us to plan to provide the best care for the baby during the pregnancy and right after the birth instead of waiting for the child to display symptoms,” Dr. Monson said.

If parents are told to return for more imaging, it doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong.

“Being told to come back for more imaging can be anxiety-provoking and nerve-wracking,” she said. “I’d reassure families that most of the time, it’s because the pictures from the ultrasound weren’t clear enough. Most of the time when we see patients for a return ultrasound, there are no problems detected. Until someone tells you something definitive, try not to worry.”

Puregold Hakot Relay draws 4,000 runners

Puregold Hakot Relay draws 4,000 runners

More than 4,000 runners gathered at Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite, for the South Luzon leg of Puregold’s Hakot Relay, which introduced a new 8K Individual Challenge alongside the event’s signature grocery-themed relay.  The South Luzon leg marked the first time the Hakot Relay featured an individual 8-km race, giving solo runners a chance to take on a longer course while maintaining the event’s signature grocery “hakot” concept.  About 500 participants joined the 8K Individual Challenge, while the rest competed in the traditional Hakot Relay, where runners formed teams and raced through the course while collecting grocery items along the way.  Unlike the relay, which required teamwork and strategy, the 8K challenge tested participants individually as they completed the full distance on their own.   “We wanted to offer runners a fresh and enjoyable way to challenge themselves, with the ‘hakot’ mechanic adding a playful and uniquely Puregold twist to the race. Being part of the running community is meaningful to us, and it is a privilege for Puregold to bring people together for a shared panalo experience,” said Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, Puregold senior marketing manager.  The event began with a pre-race warm-up before participants headed to the starting line. Runners then completed their respective courses within the prescribed cut-off times.  After crossing the finish line, participants received their race-day rewards and visited sampling booths featuring participating brands. Sponsor-led activities and an awarding ceremony followed the races.  The team relay participants received a Grocery Sling Bag and a Finisher’s Grocery Bag. Meanwhile, 8K Individual Challenge finishers received a distinct reward that matched the event’s grocery-themed concept: a finisher’s grocery cart wagon to carry their loot home.  “We’re always looking for ways to level up the Hakot Relay and give Filipinos something new to look forward to. This year, it meant introducing our first-ever 8K challenge and bringing the experience to an even bigger scale,” Piedad said.   With more than 4,000 runners participating as teams or individual competitors, the South Luzon leg expanded the Hakot Relay format while retaining its signature reward, allowing participants to race to the finish line and take home groceries.

Alicia Keys, Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lopez bring star power to Vogue World in Milan

MILAN — Most of Italy’s fashion elite gathered under one roof Tuesday for Vogue’s annual fashion spectacle in the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, featuring performances by Alicia Keys and Italian ballet star Roberto Bolle. Part runway show, part cultural performance, this year’s Vogue World highlighted Italian craftsmanship and human creativity in the age of artificial intelligence. Donatella Versace sat alongside Gucci's Demna, Balenciaga's Pierpaolo Piccioli and Valentino's Alessandro Michele – the latter three having recently completed a game of fashion house musical chairs. Miuccia Prada, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were also on hand for the event that celebrated the kind of handcraftsmanship that has put Italy at the center of luxury fashion. About half of the world’s luxury apparel, footwear and leather goods are produced in Italy. Gigi Hadid opened the evening gliding through the arcade in a gold brocade gown celebrating the Italian Renaissance. Jennifer Lopez, arriving with designers Dolce and Gabbana, took a turn in a black evening dress. Supermodel Eva Herzegova led a tribute to the late Giorgio Armani, who died last September. Many designer wears were recognizable as they blazed across the marble gallery floor on models, Italian celebrities and athletes — including trailing Moncler puffers, Prada’s banana-print button down shirt, a safety pin-cinched Versace evening gown, a Pucci print and a Bottega Veneta fiberglass coat. Keys closed the evening performing in a beaded dress with a regal train under the Galleria's glass dome. Bolle, who performed with dancers from La Scala's academy, presented her with a rose. Milan was the last of the four major fashion capitals to host the event, which launched in New York in 2022, followed by editions in London, Paris and Los Angeles. This edition raised money for a cultural center fostering fashion, music and artistic talent at the Quarto Oggiaro Library in northwestern Milan.
